7 Day Open Studio Art Retreat: Finding Your Abstract Voice

📍 Hội An, Da Nang, Vietnam, Vietnam 📅 7 days 🎯 Beginner 🌿 Tropical, Riverside, Beach, Countryside

About This Retreat

A beginner-friendly abstract art retreat in Hoi An, Vietnam - guided workshops in oil pastel, acrylic, and printmaking, paired with open studio time, cultural outings, and shared local meals. No experience needed, just the space to explore materials and find your own creative voice.

Finding Your Abstract Voice is a week-long, beginner-friendly art retreat in Tra Que, a quiet organic herb-farming village just outside Hoi An, Vietnam - rice paddies on the doorstep, the UNESCO-listed Ancient Town ten minutes away, the beach a short ride down the road. It suits creative beginners drawn to abstract work, anyone returning to art after a long gap, and travelers who want real studio time alongside a genuine sense of place. No previous experience is needed - the focus is on exploration and enjoyment rather than perfection. What sets the week apart is the studio at its heart: a dedicated, fully equipped space open 24 hours a day, not a borrowed hotel corner for a couple of scheduled hours. When a workshop sparks something, you can keep going that evening or first thing the next morning, your work left set up as you found it. The group stays small, three to six people, so the week feels personal rather than processed. And rather than teaching you what to paint step by step, the workshops introduce materials and techniques, then leave you space to find your own way of working. Workshops in oil pastel, acrylic, and lino printmaking introduce color, texture, and layering, with all materials provided. You'll build texture with a brush or palette knife, cut and pull your first prints, and learn to trust your instincts rather than overthink - with open studio time built into every day to continue your own work alongside the guided sessions. The week is woven through with cultural experiences that feed back into the work: a guided walk through the Old Town, a hands-on ceramics session at a local pottery village, a walk through the Tra Que fields and a cooking class with vegetables picked that morning, and a Vietnamese coffee workshop. Mornings begin with optional yoga, with plenty of room to cycle through the rice paddies, head to the beach, or rest between sessions, and shared meals prepared from local ingredients become part of the rhythm. Throughout, your studio host Vinh leads by showing rather than instructing and steps back early - on hand for a second pair of eyes when you want one, never hovering. Most guests settle in faster than they expect, try materials they've never touched, and make for the pleasure of it. You'll leave with at least one finished piece on canvas, new techniques, a clearer sense of your own creative voice, and the momentum to keep making long after you've gone home - along with new friendships and lasting memories of Hoi An

Vinh Dang

Vinh Dang

Creative Director & Studio Host

Vinh comes to retreat facilitation with an unusual mix – a background in interior design, a deep understanding of materials and process, and the kind of hands-on curiosity that once led him, as a teenager, to drill holes in collected wooden sticks to make pencils he could sell. In the studio, he leads by showing rather than instructing, and steps back early. His approach is patient and unhurried – and when he does offer a suggestion, it tends to arrive at exactly the right moment, phrased in a way that helps you see something for yourself rather than feeling corrected. The retreats he has designed reflect the same sensibility: structured enough to give the week shape, open enough to let your own work find its direction. Working with Vinh, you'll find yourself seeing differently – noticing things you'd have walked past before, finding inspiration in unexpected places, and reaching for materials you wouldn't have trusted yourself with, making work that surprises you.
